The SSE secures the network perimeter through the operations of the firewall, virtual private networks (VPNs), intrusion detection system and intrusion prevention system (IDS/IPS), network access control (NAC), data loss prevention (DLP) and enterprise anti-virus solutions. The SSE is responsible for the secure design of the local area network (LAN), virtual LAN (VLAN), wide area network (WAN) and all endpoints. In conjunction with the Network Engineers, the SSE is the systems designer or operator responsible for the security of all clients and servers. The SSE develops and hardens custom applications. The SSE ensures all security relevant information system software, hardware, and firmware is maintained and documented in accordance with pertinent Configuration Management Plans.

As a member of the multi-disciplinary agile development team, the SSE conducts all aspects of Information Assurance of systems to include the following:

    • Analyze existing and future systems, review security architectures, and develop engineering solutions that integrate information security requirements to proactively manage information protection
    • Apply security risk assessment methodology to system development, including assess and audit network penetration testing, antivirus deployment, and risk analysis
    • Conduct Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT) activities, including forensic analysis
    • Engineer and deploy network defense countermeasures such as anti-virus, anti-spam, and intrusion detection and prevention system solutions
    • Analyze Information Assurance (IA) security events, including threat model development and resulting security risk analysis of systems
    • Review and assess information security events and logs via sophisticated security information and event manager
    • Maintain Agency public key infrastructure system. Implement security designs in hardware, software, data and procedure
    • Conduct certification and accreditation planning and testing
    • Ensure information systems (at the local site) are operated, maintained, and disposed of in accordance with internal security policies and practices outlined in pertinent information systems concepts of operations (CONOPS) and the local System Security Authorization Agreements (SSAA)
    • Monitor the system recovery processes to ensure security features and procedures are properly restored
    • Ensure all information system security-related documentation is current and accessible to authorized individuals

The SSE doubles also as the Configuration Manager critical to the affective operational management of a complex portfolio of applications with many applications having dependencies on internal and external systems. The SSE will work closely with the rest of the ADT to ensure that the enterprise tooling is up to date. The SSE is responsible to develop and maintain the configuration management regiment. The SSE identifies and records the relationships between services, assets, infrastructure, software and applications and notifies the team and Government leadership when changes occur that might affect accreditation. The SSE develops and implements software license management processes (inventory, usage, and procurement reconciliation). The SSE works with the ADT to monitor and notify the group regarding newly released security related bulletins and related applicable security patches; performs root cause analysis, and develop fixes for distribution errors; and investigates and troubleshoots technical issues regarding software and patch distributions.
