Systems utilize hardware like Raspberry PI, BeagleBone, and single board Intel hardware. This position involves working hands-on with software and hardware systems that are deployed in various autonomous applications including robotic platforms for sea, land, and air. Other application areas include IoT, vehicle telematics, and biometric collection systems. Additional tasks also involve reverse engineering software and firmware files designed for microcontrollers as well as network analysis of vulnerabilities with interfaces such as serial and Ethernet.

    Core Responsibilities

    • Design and develop software considering low-power operation, low bandwidth, spotty network connectivity, and optimized memory.
    • Write driver software that directly controls low-level prototype hardware systems performing various operations such as capturing video, activating motors, controlling fans and blowers, and monitoring location.
    • Design, develop, code, test and debug system software.
    • Design UI software to allow human interaction with autonomous control software designed for above applications.
    • Assist hardware engineers in the design of various embedded hardware systems by providing software interface specifications as well as building out hardware prototypes to accomplish various functions.
    • Analyze and reverse engineer existing embedded hardware systems (to include IoT devices, vehicle telematics systems, and biometric collection hardware.) as well as customize off-the-shelf hardware for successful operation within unique deployment environments.

    Basic Qualifications

    • Proficiency with embedded C/C+ (proficiency defined as code projects well the first time through with speed).
    • Excellent knowledge of OS coding techniques, IP protocols, interfaces, and hardware subsystems.
    • Working knowledge of Python is required
    • Working knowledge of some other languages with an aptitude for picking new languages up as the job requires.
    • Familiarity with web socket based interfaces in C/C++, Python, or Java.
    • Familiarity developing low level software to run on Linux hardware systems such as Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone as well as microcontroller hardware such as Arduino and Atmel AVR.
    • Possess a working knowledge of digital electronics, can read schematics, component data sheets, and have the ability to work with low-level interfaces such as I2C, SPI, CAN, and UART.
    • Proven experience in embedded systems design with preemptive, multitasking operating systems.
    • Comfortable working with internal and open source libraries.
    • Strong documentation and writing skills.
    • Willing and able to work in an environment with minimally specified requirements and can maintain the flexibility to work around changing requirements.
    • Strong problem solving skills. Possess the ability to look at an existing system, figure out what’s not working and why, and then design and deploy a solution to get the job done.
    • Used to working as part of a team and figuring out how to divide up the work, how to offer suggestions, and how to play nice with others.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field with a minimum of 11 years of experience
    • Thorough knowledge of C++ and Python
    • Working knowledge of web sockets based interfaces
    • Working knowledge of Java and/or other programming languages a plus
    • Working knowledge of digital electronics preferred
